Getting Properly Trained
As a trades person yourself you know only to well how important it is to get the right level of training and understanding. Asbestos is a class 1 carcinogen and known to cause asbestos related diseases when the tiny minute fibres are inhaled, which makes it even more of a reason to be properly trained given that the work you undertake, could involve disturbing the fabric of the building, which if asbestos was present, could potentially if breathed in, affect your health later on in life.

UK Asbestos Training Association

As a registered member of  UKATA, you can rest assured that the training we deliver, is second to none, having been audited every year since becoming a member, with our training materials verified to meet the requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Ferncroft one of the founding members of UKATA have been with the association from day one, being instrumental in designing and creating the online certificate register for which helped UKATA become one of the leading global training associations.

What the Law Says
The UK Government like other countries, has specific legislation in place to deal with asbestos by way of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Regulation 10 ‘Information, Instruction and Training’, places a mandatory requirement to ensure that anyone who could come across asbestos as part of there normal everyday work has Asbestos Awareness Training.

Asbestos awareness training should be given to employees whose work could foreseeably disturb the fabric of a building and expose them to asbestos or who supervise or influence the work.
In particular, it should be given to those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that ACMs may become exposed during their work. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • demolition workers;

  • construction workers;

  • general maintenance staff;

  • electricians;

  • plumbers;

  • gas fitters;

  • painters and decorators;

  • joiners;

  • shop fitters;

  • plasterers;

  • roofers;

  • heating and ventilation engineers;

  • telecommunication engineers;

  • computer and data installers;

  • fire and burglar alarm installers;

  • architects, building surveyors and other such professionals.

Thraining can be done in one of two ways by attending one of our UKATA registered classroom based half day asbestos awareness training courses, or by taking our UKATA registered online CBT e – learning courses. And what’s more, we are more than happy to come to you to deliver the training.

Who is at Risk from Asbestos

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognise's that any building built before the year 2000 could have asbestos within products used in construction. Whilst undisturbed it is deemed to be safe, however once disturbed and the fibres become airborne, breathing them in can lead to future respiratory diseases.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (the Regulations) set minimum standards for the protection of employees from risks related to exposure to asbestos. Employers should also take account of people not directly employed by them but who could be affected by the work being done on asbestos (including employees of other employers, people occupying buildings, members of the public etc).
